The NYC to Niagara Falls Road Trip

Niagara Falls is one of the most accessible bucket-list destinations for New Yorkers, and a road trip is the best way to get there. The drive from Manhattan to Niagara Falls, NY covers roughly 400 miles and takes about six to seven hours without stops — making it a perfect long weekend getaway. Unlike flying to a tropical destination (which eats a full day on each end), you can leave NYC on a Friday afternoon and be standing in front of the Falls by midnight. Pack the car, queue up a podcast, and hit the road. Here is everything you need to know to plan the trip.

Route Options

The I-90 Route (Fastest)

The most direct route follows I-87 North (New York State Thruway) from the city through the Hudson Valley, then connects to I-90 West at Albany. From there, it is a straight shot across upstate New York through Syracuse, Rochester, and Buffalo before reaching Niagara Falls. This route is approximately 400 miles and takes six to seven hours in normal traffic. The New York State Thruway is a toll road — expect to pay roughly $20 to $25 in tolls each way if you have E-ZPass (cash rates are higher).

The Scenic Route via Finger Lakes

If you have an extra day, consider detouring through the Finger Lakes region. After Albany, take I-90 West to Route 414 South toward Seneca Lake and Watkins Glen. The Finger Lakes wine region is stunning — rolling hills, pristine lakes, and over 100 wineries. Watkins Glen State Park has a two-mile gorge trail with 19 waterfalls that is one of the most beautiful hikes in the Northeast. From the Finger Lakes, continue west on Route 20 or I-90 to reach Niagara Falls. This route adds two to three hours of driving but turns the trip into a multi-destination adventure.

Best Stops Along the Way

Woodbury Common Premium Outlets (45 min from NYC)

If you need a shopping break early in the drive, Woodbury Common in Central Valley has 250 designer outlet stores. It is right off I-87 and makes a good first stop if you left the city early and need to stretch your legs.

Albany / Saratoga Springs (2.5 hours)

Saratoga Springs is a charming detour just north of Albany. The downtown is walkable with boutique shops, cafes, and the famous Saratoga mineral springs. In summer, the Saratoga Race Course — America's oldest thoroughbred racetrack — draws crowds from across the region. It is an excellent lunch stop on a Friday afternoon.

Syracuse (4 hours)

The halfway point of the drive. Syracuse is home to Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, a legendary BBQ joint right off the highway. The pulled pork and brisket are worth a 30-minute detour. The restaurant is on West Willow Street, just minutes from the I-81/I-690 interchange.

Rochester (5 hours)

If you are a food lover, Rochester's "garbage plate" — a local delicacy of burgers, hot dogs, mac salad, home fries, and meat sauce piled on a single plate — is a must-try. Nick Tahou Hots is the originator, though dozens of restaurants across the city serve their own versions. It is the kind of meal that fuels the last hour of a road trip.

When to Go

Best Months

May through October offers the best weather and access to all outdoor attractions. The Maid of the Mist and Cave of the Winds operate seasonally (typically May through November). Summer weekends are the busiest — expect larger crowds at the Falls and longer border waits if you cross to Canada. September and October are the sweet spot: fewer crowds, fall foliage along the gorge, and comfortable temperatures.

Timing the Drive

Leave NYC on a Friday afternoon no later than 3 PM to beat the worst of the outbound traffic on I-87. Friday evening traffic in the city can add an hour to your departure. If possible, leave earlier or wait until 7 PM when the rush subsides. For the return trip on Sunday, leave Niagara Falls by 10 AM to arrive in the city before evening traffic builds on the approach to the George Washington Bridge or through the Lincoln Tunnel.

What to Do When You Arrive

Once you reach Niagara Falls, the top attractions are:

  • Niagara Falls State Park — Free admission, open year-round. Walk to the Falls, visit the Observation Tower, and stroll Goat Island.
  • Maid of the Mist — The iconic boat ride into the basin of Horseshoe Falls. Runs May through November. About 20 minutes, departs every 15 minutes. Tickets around $22 for adults.
  • Cave of the Winds — Wooden walkways at the base of Bridal Veil Falls. You will get soaked. Ponchos provided. The "Hurricane Deck" is unforgettable.
  • Niagara Gorge Trail — Miles of hiking trails along the gorge rim with stunning views of the rapids and whirlpool.
  • Rainbow Bridge crossing — Walk or drive to Canada for the panoramic view of Horseshoe Falls from the Ontario side. Passport required.
